Page 1 SEO Results: The Real Story
I think that the challenge of attracting traffic to ones website will one day be nominated for being one of the 7 great wonders of the world. Search engine optimization, or SEO as it’s become known, has for a long time now been at the forefront of this challenge and for good reason. Over time, and if done properly by a qualified SEO services company, it can produce the best results by gaining your website broad exposure over a wide area of the internet thereby exposing your site to a wider audience than what might be achieved by just using paid advertising or print media.
SEO is a great way to advertise any website these days and over the long run, even taking into consideration all the time, effort and in some cases money invested, it’s still the cheapest route to take and potentially the route with the greatest return. That being said, SEO is not without it’s quirks. One should fully familiarize themselves with the pitfalls that lay ahead when starting a campaign such as this. Afterall, you’ll either be giving up a lot of your time or your money and there are some important facts that you’ll need to learn about before setting your expectations too high at first.
The promise of huge amounts of traffic stemming from a first page listing on the search engines makes many folks quiver with excitement. Perceptions of big pay-offs in such cases are widespread and while in some instances may be reasonably accurate there’s much truth left untold in this regard. Just how much traffic can one really expect?
The amount of traffic you can expect to receive directly from a 1st page listing is directly related to a few factors. The popularity of the key phrase you’ve been listed for probably has the most impact in this regard. Page position and your listings description will also play a role. Your description should be worded in such a way that it will attract the type of customer or market that you are targeting. You need to describe exactly what they are looking for and if you do that well then you will be rewarded with a higher amount of clicks.
I’ve taken many phone calls over the years from people who are listed on a first page of Google for certain key phrases asking me why they aren’t seeing a huge traffic flow. My answer to them is always with the question “did you do your keyword research to approximate how many queries your term receives regularly?” The answer is always the same too, dead silence. The point here is that if you optimize one of your web pages for a search term that only gets 20 inquiries per day you’re not even likely to see all of those come to your site unless you are near the top of the page and your site description looks inviting. Then again, if you are listed on page 1 for a search term that receives 1,000 inquiries per day and your site’s description attracts a good percentage of the inquirers you might get more business than you’re capable of handling, even if you’re far down the page.
The best advice I can give is to do your research and choose the key phrases you’ll be optimizing for carefully. Using a balance of both popular and not so popular key phrases is important, especially when you are first starting out because it’ll be awhile before you’re able to get listed for the best phrases so don’t automatically put aside less popular terms because they can help you to get on the map and will slowly help your site to earn value. The key with SEO is to run a well balanced campaign that gives you good overall exposure across the internet in general and not just on the search engines. It’s smarter to pick up small amounts of traffic from many different areas of the web than it is to place all of your eggs in one basket by relying on a single first page listing.
