How Can You Find The Best Merchant Account?
Finding the best merchant account can be a tricky process which is why you have to know all the facts that you can about how the merchant account industry works.
Of course first comes the rates. However, it is very important to realize that these are not the be all and end all, and there are other things as a total that have a bigger impact.
Many companies will give a very low rate and then not tell their customers that this is a discount rate and that it will go up, either after an introduction period, or it will change depending on how the credit card transaction is processed.
There are also other charges that will affect the monthly bill and these include a transaction fee as well as a statement fee, and they will add significantly to just what the rate is.
Check any contract that comes with the account very carefully. There are many companies out there that use this as an excuse to get people into a long term contract. This is not fair and the best companies won’t.
The most useful method of finding out what a merchant account provider is really like in the marketplace, is to get a full consultation with them to examine exactly what the rate scheme is like. If they do not offer this, then do not do business with them.
Lastly, the best merchant account will have a very high level of customer service. it is no good having lots and lots of orders if they are not being processed for whatever reason. This would ultimately negate the reason for having a facility to take credit cards in the first place.
Although, it seems as though this would always be considered by people, in reality this is actually not the case at all.

Simon,
You’re absolutely right about the above points, but unfortunately too many merchants skip over them because they seem to be too time consuming. But my advice to them is that all of the due diligence is well worth the effort. Understand that merchant service providers know how complicated this whole process is, and their sales reps have dealt with the same conversations over and over again. So as a new merchant you become the “fresh-fish” that needs to be caught. If you’re good at researching and negotiating, then you should be just fine.
On a side note, I do want to mention our blog here at http://www.merchantmaverick.com. I hate to plug my own site, but please do take a look and tell me that it doesn’t save you all of that time trying to review merchant accounts yourself.
Best of luck to you.
