This question was posted on an internet forum the other day.

“Hi everyone, I’m relatively new to IM and I’ve just finished a website that I was working on for the past few weeks. The web site has a navigation bar on the left and one of the pages has a list of all the articles I wrote. It is a dog website.

Now for my question

I know that I have to built backlinks to get indexed and achieve good serps. Now do I build backlinks using the web site address that takes the reader to the home page or do I build the links to the various pages found on my website?

Any input is appreciated”

Hi,

Both.

One easy way to do this is by article marketing.

This is what I would do:

Find 30 long tail keywords (go here:
http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/) that have between 2-7
searches per day and under a 1,000 results returned in Google for those
keywords in quotes (this will work with 50 searches and up to 10,000
results, but the results will be much faster with the first set of numbers).

Write 30 articles with the long tail keywords as titles to your articles.

In your signature box use 2 of the long tail keywords as anchor text for pages of your website.

Example:

To learn more about House Breaking Your Dog click here=><a
href=”http://yourdomain.com/index.html”>Long Tail Keyword #1</a>
Read more articles here=><a href=”http://yourdomain.com/page1″>Long
Tail Keyword #2</a>

For the next article use long tail keywords #3 & #4 (and so on).

Submit these articles, one per day for 30 days to Ezine Articles.

When the article goes live on Ezine Articles go to
http://www.socialmarker.com/ and bookmark your article to at least 10
bookmarking sites.

There is more that you can do, but this is a great start. Your site and its
internal pages will be indexed quickly. If you do your keyword research
properly, you will be on the 1st page of Google for your keywords.

There are two phrases that you hear over and over again in
internet marketing. The first one is that ‘Content Is King’.

This is more true than anybody realizes, even more true than
the folks that preach it.

You see, Internet Marketing is a very recent pheonomena. It
is a young field still in its infancy. As a result, things can and
do change extremely fast.

One side effect to this is that people are always discovering new
ways to manipulate the system.

In other words, they discover tricks to drive traffic to their site.

There are numerous resources to teach you how to do these things.
Products come out practically everyday trumpeting their methods
for driving traffic to your site.

You can master SEO (search engine optimization), learn blogging,
set up blog forums, posting on forums, how to get backlinks, how
to do keyword research, PPC (pay per click) and on and on and on.

Don’t get me wrong. These things actually work and lots of people
have made lots of money by discovering how the system works and
exploiting it. But things change. Google changes their algorithims
and at least for a little while, everything goes into the crapper.

But I’ll tell you one thing that does not change, ever. Content.
People want and need quality content.

If you create fresh, quality, original content, you will beat every
system out there every single time.

Yes, in the short run, tricks will win out. Eventually though, those
sites are sandbagged. Their links will be dropped. At some point
these webmasters have to move on and find a new method to drive
traffic to their site.

There is one thing that will always work and that is Content. Put
original, quality traffic on your site and you will get traffic. Write
original articles and submit them to directories and you will get
traffic.

This method will never die. Ever. This method is so strong that I’ll
venture to say that you don’t have to know SEO or anything about
keyword research. Yeah, it helps, but the truth is that you don’t need
it. It may take a little longer, but not only will it work, it will also
stick.

If you write content that is geared to the human reader (and not bots),
the SEO and yes, even the keywords will take care of themselves.

Sometimes I write my articles with long tail keywords. At other times
I write an article with a title that I find catchy. Guess which one gets
read more and gets me more backlinks. Right, the catchy title.

Yeah, my long tail keywords end up on the first page of Google for my
keyword. So what. Google Analytics show that I get 45% of my traffic
comes from search engines. Guess where the other half is coming from?

By the way, my articles direct my traffic to my salespage. My search engine
traffic is going mostly to other pages on my site (for my long tail keywords).
Guess where my sales are from?

Anyway, I think you get my point. The truth is that different approaches
work for different people. If, however, you are just starting out you should
seriously consider the following two things.

1/ Put quality, original content on your site (this is the real “stickiness”).

2/ Submit quality, original articles to article directories.

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best way to get started.
